15 miles from Bentonville [NC]
Mch 23rd ‘65
Fought the enemy about 4 miles from Bentonville … Before sundown the firing became terrific, both artillery & small arms. We learned from prisoners that the 17th corps had been brought up, having been double-quicked four miles. Our men still held their own, & but for the breaking of our line by rushing the men forward precipilately we might have gained a decisive victory. It is a fault ever to suffer a line of battle to be broken in the hour of victory. In consequence of it on this occasion we failed to reap the full fruits of our success.
[Declared a Union victory, Battle of Bentonville resulted in more than 3,000 Confederate casualties]
