Description	Page entry: Wednesday the enemy forced a crossing of the congaree Creek +that night we retired across the river and burnt the bridge-We skirmished with them all Thursday across the Congaree-Some of the men behaved scandalously-robbing and pillaging at the depot-much public + a great deal of private property was taken by the thieves ... Our forces have been scattered in such a way that we can not do more (following page) than delay the march of [Union General William Tecumseh]Sherman. He outnumbers us largely, & it would be madness to fight.
