Civil
War
Diary
of
Confederate
soldier
George
D.
Wise
,
[April
27
,
1864]
Description
[Throughout
the
war
Nathan
Bedford
Forrest’s
reputation
as a
superb
military
commander
and
strategist
always kept him one
step
ahead
of the
Union
armies
. Following the
war
, he
returned
to his
native
Tennessee
to help found the
Ku
Klux
Klan
and
served
as its highest
elected
official
]…So
much for
Forrest
-
a very
meager
acct
. of his
achievements
during the last
month
-
but
history
will do
impartial
justice
to the
hero
of the West. The
siege
of
Charleston
a
confessed
failure
-
our
arms
everywhere
victorious
-
the
hosts
of
gallant
Lee
&
noble
Johnston
marshaled
for the
fray
we have
naught
to
fear
-
‘give
us
victory
or give us
death,’
better to
die
all
freemen
than to
live
all
slaves
. My
division
(Genl
.
Stevenson
comd’g)
left their
winter
quarters
yesterday
&
marched
to the front
(Crow
valley)
.
[General
Thomas]Hindman’s
Divn
. Also went
forward
-
taking
position
on our right.
