Old Forrest [General Nathan Bedford Forrest] travels so fast & does so much that one can scarcely keep pace with him. I think seriously of employing a clerk – whose special business it shall be to write down in this journal the exploits of noble old Forrest. He has been in Kentucky – captured Paducah in that state with immense supplies – other points also he visited in his perambulations not now remembered – picking up prisoners here & there. The 12th this month he appeared before & demanded the surrender of Fort Pillow – the Fed. Commander declining he determined to take it & take it he did. The telegrams represent that the fort ran red with blood – 400 out of 600 were made to bite the dust. There were some negro soldiers there.
