H. Elmer Gibb was president of the Brooklyn dry goods firm of Frederick Loeser and Company and associated with a subsidiary company, Mills and Gibb, one of the largest importers of fancy dry goods in the country at the turn of the 20th century. The house had 27 rooms and was surrounded by a 27-acre farm with stables, carriage house, seven barns, three cottages and a greenhouse. Now the location of the Sussex Avenue School.
